Obama's Foreign Campaign Donations

At 1:07:00 (1 hour & 7 minutes) into John Batchelor's latest show is a detailed examination into the "strange" campaign donations made to the Obama Campaign. You will learn about strange donation amounts, made via credit card, to the campaign. Such amounts include the following: $188.67, $1,542.06, $876.09, $388.67, $282.20, $195.66, $118.15.

Do these sound like donation amounts that Americans would make via their credit cards? Of course not. It is now assumed that these are foreign donations and the strange amounts are the result of foreign currency conversions.

In case you're not aware, it is absolutely illegal for even $0.01 of foreign donations to an American election campaign. Don't believe me? Please click here.

You'd thus think that the mainstream media would be all over this story, right? You'd be wrong. This is one of the few stories I could find on it.

No, but then, I get called "cynical" all the time. I think the msm is too busy going through Sarah Palin's trashcans.

I'm trying to keep up with your posts, who needs sleep anyway?

As far as I know, the law does not prohibit a US citizen from donating foreign currency. For example: a US citizen living in England could make a donation in British Pounds. This would then be converted to US Dollars, resulting in an odd figure.

Dear Red,

Countless tests have been done by journalists and others, donating small amounts to the Obama campaign using phoney names and phoney addresses. Now we learn of strange amounts that were clearly donated from foreign credit cards.

Yet you choose to believe that these were all legitimate donations by Americans living overseas?

Were you aware that Denial is more than just a river in Egypt?

Pelalusa, I'm not denying anything. In fact, I just found out about this issue while in the midst of writing a legal comment on campaign finance; I'm very interested in researching this issue even further.

However, you wrote that it is "absolutely illegal for even $0.01 of foreign donations to an American election campaign." I was simply trying to explain the law by pointing out that an odd-numbered donation resulting from a foreign currency conversion is not per se illegal.

Sure, there's a strong presumption that some of these donations were from foreign nationals, thereby making them illegal donations. I didn't realize you'd get so hostile and defensive. Do you always treat your guests this way?

"Red",

I am of course aware that Americans living overseas can make donations legally to an American election campaign.

But your implication that this is where the bulk of Obama's questionable donations came from (I've heard it estimated at at least $60 Million) is insulting to everyone's intelligence.

My Denial vs. The Nile joke is my friendly way of doing that. If you choose to view that as "hostile and defensive", that's your prerogative.

Further to the paper you're writing, I might suggest you take a look at these:

In case anyone's interested, here's further discussion of the same.
