Letter Sent To Kevin Falcon

It was announced today that the incompetent, unaccountable political body known as Translink, will be restructured by year's end. You can read more about this here. Soon after I heard Burnaby's communist mayor, Derek Corrigan, speaking out against it and threatening BC Transportation Minister, Kevin Falcon, with a "popular revolt". Anytime Corrigan is against something, I know it's a good idea! I felt compelled to write the minister:

Dear Mr. Falcon:

Last year I was one of several hundred professional engineers who attended a presentation you made at the Plaza 500 Hotel at 12th & Cambie. You may recall that one engineer asked a simple question: "Will there ever come a time when there will be some transportation experts on the Translink board?" Only an engineer could ask something so obvious, so logical.

Now that you have made a change in this direction, the usual suspects are railing against it. Though I can't obviously speak for all engineers, I'd think that the vast majority of them would share my sentiments: Well Done and Long Overdue!!!

Right now I'm actually down in Miami, Florida. I've had the opportunity to take a close look at their extremely limited transit system. Parts of it are free and yet so few people ride it. There is tremendous resistance amongst car-crazy South Floridians to support intelligent transportation options. The result is bumper-to-bumper traffic from sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week. Ughhh.

So good on you for what you're attempting to do. Stand your ground, stare your opponents in the eye, and ask those opponents why on earth they wouldn't want transportation experts helping with the decisions!!

Sincerely,

Robert Werner, P.Eng.

Great post on the need for transportation experts on the Translink board.

It has been crazy to have all those ideological politicians, like Corrigan, addressing the regions transportations needs.

Derek Corrigan has been the worst, with his opposition to almost all transit improvements. If the BC Liberal Government had a plan to improve the regions transit problems, you could guarantee he was against it. He's motivated by a left wing political agenda and he used his seat on Translink to promote it.

Good riddance!

Walter,

I'm not against any politician of any strip that helps out people. But there's a big difference between helping out an individual who has had a true injustice against them vs. corrupting the democratic process by ensuring that only certain companies have a shot at winning a contract. The latter is akin to what happens with the mafia.

Being down here in Miami for an extended period, I'm more acutely aware of the rampant anti-democratic, anti-free-market views of so many of my fellow British Columbians.

I'm not saying that all is perfect here. It isn't. But listening in to CKNW and hearing callers scream that every policy of the BC Liberals is wrong, corrupt, and only padding the pockets of their supporters is just too much to take. Ignorance may be bliss but couldn't the most ignorant strive to be a bit more quiet?

Kevin Falcon's new policy re Translink makes complete sense. How some can immediately dismiss it just shows how much ignorance there is all around us.

I wish my fellow British Columbians could spend more time, like I have, talking with folks from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Cuba, and Venezuela. I think they might quickly wake up to the fact that we are extremely lucky to be living where we are. And free enterprise is a BIG REASON why we have the wealth we do.
