Directions from Women vs. Directions from Men

My mom insisted we go to an amazing bakery called "Union Bakery", which she was referred to by her friend, Stephanie. I googled the name but there was no such establishment in Vancouver.

So she obtained directions from Stephanie, which are shown at the top. I shook my head when I saw these and exclaimed, "This could only come from a woman!"

We eventually did find the place. It's not a bakery but a little corner store run by a Portuguese family and is called "Union Market". For contrast purposes, I rewrote the directions!

Incidentally, the bread there is delicious!!

Dead Crow

I spotted a dead crow this morning and reported it here. It might have died from the West Nile virus but a bit later I saw a BC Hydro truck repairing something just above so perhaps it was electrocuted.

Rental Scams in Vancouver

My eyes are being opened up to an apparent epidemic of crime in & around renting a place to live in Vancouver. To read some horrendous stories click here.

If you have your own story to add, please do share it with me.

Catching Up . . .

I went on vacation on June 17th and, unlike times past, I chose to stay off the Internet as much as possible. It was a very healthy thing to do! I'm now going to catch up on posting the 1,100+ photos & videos I shot.

These two were actually taken in Vancouver, shortly before I left.

More Flower Shots

On my way home I captured these flower shots, which I think are keepers!

Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Park

When I was a kid my dad used to take me & my brother up here all the time. QE Park, also known as "Little Mountain", is a favourite of tourists and locals alike! It's an extinct volcano whose center has been replaced with a botanical garden (which many wedding photographers use as a stunning backdrop) and an enormous water tank that feeds the entire city. From a boy's perspective, it's a huge playground perfect for hide & seek, "guns", etc. Great memories!

I hadn't been up here in a few years and decided to visit today ... camera in hand, of course!

Mayor Robertson Meets Reality

I just heard a woman on the radio named "Lynne" talking about the situation of the two homeless shelters near Beach and Howe. She mentioned that there are now dozens upon dozens of street people living just a block from a preschool, how loud parties are going on all the time, how urinating and fornicating is going on, and how used needles are being found all around the area.

Our "beloved" leader, Mayor Gregor Robertson, was interviewed on the issue here @ 36:00. Listen to the naive twit and see if you gain ANY confidence from what he's saying. If you think I'm being too harsh then read what Alex Tsakumis has to say.

I will never forget when Robertson was running to be my MLA for the first time. He was on a radio talk show which I called and asked him this simple question:

My elderly mother and her friends are getting increasingly scared of being out on the streets. They are getting increasingly harassed by panhandlers. If you're elected, what are you going to do about it?

His answered floored me: "Elderly people like your mother should appreciate all they have and have more empathy for those without." His answer spoke volumes to me and why I'm not surprised one bit about his absolute incompetence on this issue.

With the world media soon to be descending on Vancouver in greater & greater numbers, this will clearly be a story they will (and should!) focus on!!

Afternoon Walk

I worked hard this morning and my brain felt like putty so I decided to go on a walk on this beautiful day in Vancouver. Here are some photos I captured.

This is a neighbourhood cat, shared by its owner for all residents to give a good scratch to every so often.
