The Battleground Poll

In preparation for a discussion on BBC London Radio this evening, I wanted to get the very latest figures on how Americans view themselves politically. I quickly found the renowned Battleground Poll. The most recent version was carried out and published in August 2008.

Here are the raw figures. Please go to Page 16 and refer to question 'D3'. Here is the question and the results:

When thinking about politics and government, do you consider yourself to be . . .

  • Very conservative.........................................................20%
  • Somewhat conservative................................................40%
  • Moderate......................................................................2%
  • Somewhat liberal.........................................................27%
  • Very liberal ..................................................................9%
  • Unsure/Refused............................................................3%
Note: "Moderate" and "Unsure / Refused" were not given out as possibilities to each respondent but were recorded if that's the way the person answered the question.

Writer, Bruce Walker, provides his analysis of these results here.

Without knowing these actual statistics, I've always intuitively believed that America is fundamentally a moderate, center right nation. This just confirms that, more substantially than I could have ever imagined.

It also explains why there's an ever growing outrage at the vile, hateful comments made by DailyKos writers, British comedians, and some members of the MSM. Such people might think they're being pithy and brilliant. To the 36% on the left they're speaking to the choir but to the 60%+ they're just guaranteeing a vote for the Republicans.
