The Current State of the Radical Left

Fellow Travelers [Cliff May]

My column this week looks at the curious and unholy alliances being forged between the Left and militant Islamists. I took pains to point out there are people and institutions on the Left who would never condone terrorism or apologize for radical Islam. Even so, I received a flurry of hate-mail from people who took offense and called me names— though not one of them disputed a fact or seriously debated a conclusion. (Of course, probably unhelpful was the headline one newspaper put on my column: “Liberals Hate America.” You think the editor who wrote that was trying to be subversive? Or is stupidity the more likely explanation?)

In today’s Wall Street Journal, David Horowitz has an op-ed on the various campus groups that routinely attempt to shut down free speech, cheer when they hear the word “communist,” and openly align with Islamists. Among those groups

the International Socialist Organization, whose goal is the establishment of a "dictatorship of the proletariat" in the United States; Iranians for Peace and Justice, supporters of Hezbollah and Hamas; and Campus Progress, the unofficial college arm of the Democratic Party.

One of the local members of Campus Progress had written a column in the campus newspaper attacking me in advance of my talk, and defending Sami Al-Arian as a victim of political persecution. The conservative students who invited me to the University of Texas told me that organizations such as the Muslim Students Association routinely join with College Democrats in protests against the state of Israel.

There have to be grownups in the Democrat Party who are uncomfortable about all this. More of them have the courage to say so. Memo to DNC Chairman Tim Kaine: Shouldn’t you get the ball rolling?

Debate on Free Speech in the UK

To see just how far British citizens have strolled down the path of political correctness, listen carefully to what the female panelist, Baroness Williams, says and the loud applause she receives. Sheeple ALL!

Geert Wilders on Glenn Beck's Show

The Radical Left in Canada and the U.S. have no respect for Free Speech but they're mere amateurs at silencing others compared to their cousins in Europe.

A Brave Little Pakistani Girl

Meet a little girl named "Tuba" who lives on the outskirts of Islamabad, Pakistan. She writes constantly:

  • About the oppression of children in Pakistan.
  • That girls can't go to school in certain parts of the country.
  • That the Taliban is an oppressive and murderous regime.
Without question, this makes her braver than:
  • U.S. TV networks: ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, & PBS
  • Canadian TV networks: CBC, CTV, & Global
  • U.S. Newspapers: The NY Times, the Washington Post, and the L.A. Times
  • Canadian Newspapers: The Globe & Mail and the Toronto Star
  • Large parts of the U.S. Democrat Party
  • The Liberal Party of Canada and the NDP
  • The American National Organization of Women
  • Status of Women Canada
ALL of these aforementioned media outlets, political parties, and special interest organizations refuse to deal head on and clearly with the significant problem of oppression of women & children by Fundamentalist Islamists. One can only conclude that to do so would conflict with their politically correct views of the world. And that would make them uncomfortable. It's beyond sick!

Anti-Semitism: Then and Now

And why you ask? Because their CEO, Howard Schultz, is Jewish. Story here. Analysis here.

Update: For a Canadian perspective on the virulent anti-Semitism, here's a compelling summary of what recently happened in Calgary.

The Nazis Have Returned to Europe

And once again, most Europeans are saying nothing:

This man must be incredibly proud:

The "Peace" Movement's Big Lie

Left-of-centre blogger, Terry Glavin, explains in great detail how the peace movement has willingly joined the forces of Fundamentalist Islam.

And yet watch all those mindless Sheeple on the Left march in great ignorance. Useful idiots all!

Wake-Up Call for All Canadians

Here are more "peaceful", loyal Canadian Muslims:

The Double Anti

I've been thinking a lot more about the various groups attending the pro-Hamas rallies. For those who aren't aware, this includes some gays and even some Jews. If you were a psychologist and your boss said, "I need you to come up with a solid explanation of why those who would be immediately oppressed if Fundamentalist Islam seized power would possibly rally in support of the same right now", what would your explanation be?

These days I'm reading an amazing book by Tony Judt about Europe after WW2. I'm currently in the section focused on the 1950's. It was clear that while the USSR was oppressing millions of people, some very horribly, many in the West refused to criticize them; some even publicly showed support to the USSR and against the USA. Note that this especially included many in Western Europe, who just around a decade before had only escaped the clutches of Adolf Hitler because of America. Talk about a short memory!

Were all of these people mentally ill? That's an easy way to sum things up but probably not accurate. Judt concludes that they were "anti anti-communist".

So in their minds, most of these folks went to sleep each night, comfortable that they were not pro-oppression. They were of course, in deep denial about what was going on behind the Iron Curtain. But absolutely no different than those today who will first & foremost criticize America & Israel yet be highly reticent to criticize Radical Islam, Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, North Korea, Russia, China, Cuba, or any number of African dictators.

Though in the end equation, to any of us with even a mildly right-leaning bent, refusing to criticize totalitarian regimes appears to be exactly the same thing as lending them support; or at least giving them a free pass to do whatever they want.

Looking at the psychology of all this . . .

The Left is generally more emotional, more moved by the immediate circumstances, and rarely looks at the long term view and/or long term repercussions. Words like hypocrisy, dishonour, and self-responsibility have little meaning to those on the Left.

The Right tends to focus on the bigger picture, longer term view. Morality and Right & Wrong have more meaning with the Right, but even more so in the macro than the micro.

Note: Before anyone points out to me about corrupt conservative politicians, religious leaders, business executives, etc. let me state unequivocally that these individuals are phony, greedy poseurs. They are actually the worst of the lot, pretending to be one thing but something else entirely when the rubber hits the road.

A perfect example of this Left-Right difference is the situation of whenever a Canadian soldier kills a Taliban fighter in Afghanistan. In no way, shape, or form can Canada be accused of being an imperialist power. So why did that Canadian soldier pull the trigger on his gun, which killed the Taliban man? The Right understands that a mother's child has just died but focuses on the bigger picture, namely that the Taliban is a horrific regime that will bring nothing but oppression and immense cruelty back onto the innocent people of Afghanistan should they be allowed to return to power. The Left, on the other hand, can pretty much only focus in on the individual death and suspects that an injustice has occurred. For them, thinking beyond the immediacy of that death just doesn't occur.

Members of the media are almost always on the Left. From a psychological perspective, I don't precisely know why this is. It might be because the nature of their work has them bombarded with event after event after event. So they tend to focus most of their attention on the immediate rather than the bigger picture. Historically I wonder if there was more of a balance between Left and Right journalists, unlike the reported 98% to 2% polls say it is now. So professionally, it's very unwise for a new member of the media to espouse anything but Leftist views.

What is so dangerous about the media being so inclined is that their power to shape public opinion is enormous. And like with any good marketing campaign, be it to sell the latest widget or fashion accessory or be it to dehumanize Jews to the level of pigs & dogs, they do alter public opinion more readily than we'd all like to admit. Of course, they take no responsibility for this, citing the old canard that "they're just reporting the news". Sigh.

One saving grace is that the mainstream media is very quickly going broke. I will regret the day if there are no more formal news reporting agencies but hopefully they will remain, albeit with much more balance ... and dare I say it, professionalism. In the early part of this millennium that P-word is sadly lacking across the journalistic spectrum. It has gotten so bad that we now have prominent TV news channels faking deaths.

Mark Steyn's Latest on on Gaza

Please read Mark Steyn's latest.

Read it slowly. Read it carefully. But read it all. And then join with me and worry. For the excessive tolerance of our "progressive" politicians is so clearly leading to a time when no tolerance will be permitted whatsoever.

With apologies to Martin Niemöller, let me provide a modern version of his famous poem:

First they came for the Jews.
I remained silent, for I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Christians.
I remained silent, for I was not a Christian.

When they came for the conservatives,
I remained silent, for I was not a conservative.

When they came for the atheists,
I remained silent, for I was no longer an atheist.

Then when they came for me,
I expected someone to speak out,
But there was no one left to defend me.

Personal Reflections

Because of my family history, with my father born in Germany in 1931, I cannot help but make comparisons between 1944-45 Europe and 2008 Gaza. Different times, different wars, different people but striking resemblances indeed there are.

Every time I hear a condemnation of Israel, I think about whether it would have also been applied to the Allied Forces. Every time I hear a moral equivalency argument made about Israel and the Palestinians, I think about whether it would have been made about the Allied Forces and Nazi Germany. Every time I hear about innocent civilians being hurt or killed - I am naturally saddened and feel grief for the Palestinian families - but then I also wonder if calls were made to stop the advance of the Allied Armies toward Berlin.

To think that some people making such ludicrous arguments back then didn't exist would be naive. To think that so many today have learned NOTHING from history both saddens and appalls me. Just like the people of my father's homeland made a terrible mistake, which had to be stopped in its tracks, so must Hamas & Iran as well. For the leaders of these two tyrannies I will shed no tears.

A Sampling of "Moderate" Muslims

Facebook is a strange & peculiar place at times. Any user is able to create any group that they wish. Many of these groups are public, which anyone can join. Several Muslims have decided to create different versions of "I Hate Israel" groups. Thousands, upon thousands, of people have joined. Perhaps these would be the "moderate" Muslims we keep hearing about?

If you're a Facebook member, then take a look at this group. Here's a sampling of some of the comments therein:

  • "if israel was a person, i wont kill em until it get the worst toprture ever, fuck israel fuck everybody who support israel" - Youssef Karmoun, University of Malaga Grad Student, Spain
  • "Israel is a FAKE country, not even a country, just a band of criminals!!" - Said Ghaleb, Morocco
  • "STOP EXPLAINING AND APOLOGIZIN,YES i hate jewish.they paid & still paying 2 kill palestinians and hve th3ir own country on other's land, coz they r nawar gitanes thiefs murderers sneeky and liars, every single jewish is paying tax to israel.we have to make them feel what they made palestinians feel, i hate jewish here & there & everywhere.maya from lebannnnnnnnoooooooooooooo
ooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.proud to hate jewish, wait for us & u will see.i hve a wish:get invited to where i can find jewish,i wish to take the revenge of GAZA." - Rana Sabouni
  • "hatred is not enough let's do something more .these SAUVAGES and MURDERERS ?DESERVE MORE THAN JUST HATRE" - Hanaa Naoumi
  • "We should all pray to Allah to eradicate Izrael!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!! (But Oh!!Well we have known since the creation of the Qu'ran Al Kareem that the situation in Palestine was going to remain this way or perhaps get even worse)" - Alaoui Fdili Zineb, Richmond UK 2011 student, London
  • "NO way to accept the crimes comited in Palestine today, just like we never accepted the crimes comited in 2006 in Lebanon. We don't hate israel because of their nationality, their race, their religion or they colour of skin, but only beacause of they are Killers and nothing else. And this is note antisemitism, beacause of they are Ashkenaze, and Ashkenaze are from Europe, and caucasian, not hebrew! (even if their religion is judaism)" - Salim C.
  • "join us all against israel group from austria" - Samir Oulhaj, FH Technikum Wien Grad Student, Austria (Note: There's something more than a little spooky about the coincidence of where this fellow lives! Also, his first name has 5 letters and his last name has 6. Hmmm, who does that remind me of?!?)
  • "Allahu Akbar! When Israelis commit Genocide, they call it self defense! When Palestinians defend themselves, the media calls it terrorism! Allah will decide between the two parties!" - Drew AnZhu Ahmad Marshall, Delaware Alumni 2007, Delaware USA

Welcome to 2009! :-(

Those Killed by Israel vs. Those Hamas is Attempting to Kill

I just watched this video, provided by Israel's Defense Forces:

It shows a number of Palestinian terrorists/militants/soldiers (or whatever politically correct term you prefer) loading missiles onto the back of a truck.

The precision guided bomb sent down by Israel undoubtedly killed them all, as well as destroyed the rockets. We keep hearing about 400 Palestinians killed so far in this conflict. I have heard nothing to dispute the assertion that these men were among that 400. Knowing what they were about to do, are we supposed to feel sorrow for them and anger towards Israel? I'm sorry, but I can't.

The NY Times says Forget the People of Iraq

It has long been said that today's views of the New York Times become tomorrow's talking points of the American Democrat party. They're almost always indistinguishable. This recent editorial is no exception. In it they feign concern for the Iraqi people but clearly they're just trying to invent a wedge issue to help their kids, Clinton and Obama.

Let's take a look at where things now stand in Iraq. Nothing is perfect but the very fact that there's so little news out of there these days is a testament to how well things are going. 30,000,000 Muslims have been freed from the clutches of a horrific, murderous tyrant. Democracy now exists in another place in the Middle East besides Israel. This is something we should end?!

I realize that many reading the words above will think I'm off my meds and am some kind of right-wing war monger. If so, they'd be wrong.

Can we all agree that each person's views of the world are shaped by the experiences they've had to that point in their life? Mine involve being born into a family where my father & his siblings were little kids on the German side during WW2. He was vehemently against Hitler but was powerless to do anything about it. After the war he lived in refugee camps and then at a young age had to move far away from the family, picking potatoes 14 hours a day in order to send a little money back to them.

But what emerged from the tragedy that was Nazi Germany was a vibrant country, a true democracy, and big positive to Europe and the world.

So shall the same emerge in Iraq, given enough time and commitment. If many of you get your wish and the Americans pull out, Iran's tentacles will surely reach into Iraq and turn it into a bloodbath for a time and then a satellite state. In case you're not aware, the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas is directly funded by Iran. They're the ones who send suicide bombers into Israel to kill innocent civilians.

War is messy. The aftermath of war is often worse. But patience is the only course of action if you want a people to have the same liberty and democracy that you've enjoyed since birth; that you were given for doing absolutely nothing in return. And things that we're given with no expectations in return are almost always taken for granted, aren't they?!
