Mark Steyn on the Iranian Hostage Taking
Further to what I just wrote about the CBC human rights discussion, Mark Steyn writes a brilliant article supporting exactly what I said. Yes, of course give peace & negotiations a chance. But the Iranians know that Britain, the EU, and the UN are unlikely to do anything more than mildly protest what's going on. What a pathetic way for Tony Blair to finish up his term as prime minister.
Also, could someone please send me links to articles on how the left-wing press, so quick to condemn the U.S. for everything, is condemning Iran for this? Their silence speaks volumes.
Update: Another interesting perspective from Victor Davis Hanson.

The question that has to be asked is...why did they or their base ship not bother to defend them/selves when the Iranian boats where approaching over the horizon?
Were those Iranians out on a fishing trip and got a bigger catch than expected or were the Brits somehow in Iranian waters and the Persians were there and gave chase?
With so much spin going on and lack of reliable information as to what really happened, it's difficult to trust either side on the matter.
Your first question is a good one. It's all very odd.
One thing is for sure though: I don't place Iran on an equal moral footing with Britain. Iran has already flagrantly abused the Geneva Convention by getting public "confessions", let alone putting them on TV at all!
In the bigger picture, there is an enormous problem with Blair, Beckett, et co. taking the namby, pamby feel good approach that they have. What problem, you ask? They're clearly communicating to other totalitarian regimes that one can do anything to Britain and British subjects and completely get away with it.
Also, the fact that Germany & France, fellow EU members and Iran's biggest trading partners, refuse to even consider turning off the taps to assist 15 European citizens speaks volumes. For countries like these, Money Trumps Freedom each & every time, doesn't it?!?
Well, it looks like the peace and diplomacy method worked, with no loss of life, etc. I hate to think of what would have happened had whatever forceful method you had in mind been implemented.
Just checked out your blog, Mike. I used to love debating Socialist Kool-Aid Drinkers like you but other than entertainment value, it gets old, quick.
I'm ecstatic that the 15 Brits have been released. But had they been kept longer, eventually something more significant would have been necessary to effect their release.
I trust you realize that thanks to the likes of you, millions of people have been slaughtered in Rwanda and elsewhere. Yes Mike, thanks to you.
Your brave hero, Jack Layton, always has no problem having hundreds of thousands of Muslim women & children in Afghanistan being oppressed and worse. There are consequence to non-action, but of course your narrow, elitist worldview can't accept this possibility. I don't know if this is more sad or pathetic.
