5 GB Free Online Space

A colleague just referred me to this website: XDrive.com It's a company owned by AOL and as far as we can tell, there is no catch. Just 5 Gigabytes of free online storage. This is most useful for doing backups or for sharing files between friends and family.

Hi, I was also referred by a colleague to check out IDrive-E. This is an online backup service that allows you to backup your files and folders to online safety.

With the free account, you can backup 2GB of data for free. If you shell out some bucks, you can grab unlimited backups. The charges currently are $4.95 per month or $49.5 per year. There is no restriction on the type of files you can backup and there is no restriction on the download limits. I think certain similar online backup services have a strict no-no to downloads of big files. Read the fine print anyway.

All backup are incremental meaning that IDrive-E transfers only portions of files that have changed since the last backup was done. On their remote server, they also maintain about 30 versions of files so that I can restore any of these versions. Besides 128-bit SSL encryption on data transmission, there is 256-bit AES on storage. The best feature of this software is that it is pretty fast and I can do all the backups and restores with minimum effort and fuss.
