Is French Socialism Dead?

I'm fascinated by what's going on in France. A few weeks ago, Conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy won the presidency. Now his allies in the French parliament are getting elected in droves, in what looks likely to be a massive majority of 440-470 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly lower house.

This certainly flies directly in the face of the rhetoric I constantly hear over here that "conservatives are dead" and "Europe's showing us that socialism is clearly the way of the future". What a canard!

Huge changes are afoot in France and everyone knows it. Sarkozy et al will now change their society into something that is ... wait for it ... actually affordable!

Think the French will let their freebies go so easy? I can see strikes and strikes and protest marches and strikes. I hope I'm wrong.

Oh, of course there will be HUGE protests against the necessary changes ... just like there were HUGE protests here in B.C. even though 75 out of 77 ridings voted against the NDP. Our socialist friends don't wear their "Permanent Victim" headbands for nothing!
