Broadway & Cambie

The whole area around Cambie & Broadway in Vancouver is getting a dramatic facelift. The RAV line to the airport, passing underneath here, is almost complete. They're even working on Sundays to hurry up its completion.

London Drugs moved from its location a block West to its new one right near Cambie. As I spent 21 of my first 22 years in this neighbourhood [1965 - 1987] I'm more than a little familiar with all the changes in this part of the city.

Looking for Alice?

Might this be the proverbial rabbit hole?

Afternoon Walk - Part 3

Yaletown has definitely become home to Vancouver's ultra stylish crowd, which often gives off a radiance of phonyness, but I still think it has its charms.

Seems that the building containing the Yaletown Brewery is adding another floor to its structure.

A Glimpse of the Magnificent RAV Line

Here are some shots I snapped of the Translink RAV line construction down by Hastings and Granville. What a massive, amazing project!

Vancouver's 2nd Narrows Bridge: In Memoriam

On June 17, 1958, exactly 49 years ago, the bridge spanning East Vancouver and North Burnaby with North Vancouver suddenly collapsed in the midst of its construction.

79 workers were thrown into the water and 18 ultimately died, plus 1 diver who was involved in the search & rescue operation. You can read much more about the disaster here.

This disaster presents a special significance to locally educated engineers. Most graduate Canadian graduate engineers wear an Iron Ring on the pinky finger of their working hand. It provides a daily reminder about every professional decision they make because mistakes can sometimes have costly repercussions. Such was the case with the 2nd Narrows Bridge. A junior engineer made a mistake in the calculations for the required support during the construction. His boss, an older engineer, never caught the mistake. When the bridge collapsed they were both on the bridge at the time. Neither survived.

This bridge has since been renamed the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing but is still commonly referred to by its original name.

Brickell Construction

I know I've posted photos of these buildings before but I still can't get over how much construction is going on in the Brickell neighbourhood.

Afternoon Walk

As I work for myself, I try to go for a walk every day. It breaks up the day and tends to keep me sane. Today I went out for 2 walks!

These cement trucks are lining up for just one construction project! It's a small indication of just how much construction is occurring here in Miami right now.

This is a silhouette of a monument that appears on the east side of the US-1 bridge that connects Brickell with downtown Miami.

Here are 4 cranes working downtown. In the foreground is the Miami Metromover.

I believe that the red "M" in the foreground stands for "Metro" but that's currently just a theory!

Here's a scene of all the construction going on in Brickell, shot from the north bank of the Miami River.

Construction, Construction Everywhere!

I have never seen so many building cranes in one place as I have here in Miami this past month. The amount of construction is absolutely incredible. My friend, Chris, says that much of it is financed by foreign investors, who were all hoping to get rich with the U.S. housing boom. But that clearly has subsided so who knows how much of this new stuff they'll be able to sell or rent once it's complete. So many of these buildings will be coming online nearly all at once.

Pocket Pollster is QUICKLY Taking Off

I just learned that my Pocket Pollster software is going to be test on a prominent transit project here in Vancouver. Very cool but also a little intimidating. It's a great opportunity for me though. Things are moving forward at lightning speed . . .
