A Final Sunny Day in Waikiki

This trip to Hawaii had a surprisingly few number of sunny days. :-( Though this one happened to be one of them!

This is a Plumeria flower, which is used to construct the famous Hawaiian Leis.

The Great Weather Returns!

I had come to Hawaii in search of some sunny weather and blue skies. Finally, today it delivered!

Before heading to the beach I got some lunch at the nearby International Marketplace, opting for a few rolls of sushi from Rainbow Sushi and a smoothie from Island Breeze. Both were delicious!

Here at Waikiki Beach, notice that there's barely a cloud in the sky!

The beach was absolutely packed, with others taking immediate advantage of the great weather too!

I watched the local Hula show and unexpectedly 4 contestants from Heidi Klum's Top Model in Germany reality show came out of the audience for a little performance of their own.

A Day of Exploration

I went out for a morning walk down to Waikiki Beach. Along the way I spotted this cool storefront advertisement for Apple's iPhone.

A few people were already out enjoying themselves.

I went out for breakfast with my mom and our friend, Toni. Then I dropped off my mom at the airport for her return flight back home. Rather than drive back to Waikiki, I decided to drive up the West side of Oahu, an area I had never explored before. I took Hwy 93 up to Waianae and then all the way north to the very end of the paved road. The scenery around here was spectacular!

Is it just my imagination are do you also see two faces in this rock formation? Click on the thumbnail to see the larger version.
I don't think this was a house but rather a futuristic looking government building.

This panorama is stitched together from several individual photos. I took them by hand and didn't do a perfect job on the left side but it does capture the majestic beauty of this incredible valley!

I *believe* this is a power plant that burns used oil to generate electricity.
Back at Waikiki in the evening I captured several photos with my camera & tripod, including this one.

First Full Day on Oahu

After a much needed sleep, I went for a walk around Waikiki. It started pouring at one point, which has apparently been the case for some time this season.

The hometown kid, Barack Obama, is sure one popular guy with many locals.
The beach was as beautiful as ever.
Though seeing tourists with umbrellas was a different sight than last year!

My mom and I picked up our Chicago friend, Toni, and drove up to the north shore town of Kailua where we had breakfast at Boots & Kimo's.
Here's a nice shot of my 88 year old friend, Toni. She absolutely is one of the most hilarious people you'll ever meet!
The restaurant is famous for their banana pancakes covered with a homemade Macadamia Nut sauce. Yum x 1,000 ! ! !
This isn't a very good shot but this little Hawaiian girl should be in commercials. Absolutely adorable!
We then continued on our drive around the North Shore of Oahu. It was windy but fairly clear.

The palm trees give away a hint of the strength of the wind.

Here are my two fellow travelers.
Toni wanted to try the cooked shrimp. Giovanni's came highly recommended.

They definitely didn't disappoint! I highly recommend the Scampi (garlic butter) variety.
The wind made for some pretty strong waves.
Back in Waikiki, my mom & I decided to join Toni for church.
The stained glass windows inside are spectacular!

We dropped off Toni and then went to try one of our favourites, the Rainbow Drive-In.

A long day but a fun one!
