Boeing 747 Anniversary

January 22, 1970 was the first commercial flight of a Boeing 747 aircraft. It was flown by Pan Am between New York and London.

The origins of the 747 are rather infamous. The creation of the airplane reportedly all started from this simple note in 1965:

Dear Mr Boeing,
Please build us a very big aeroplane soon. If it is pretty as well that will be a bonus. We will buy lots of them.
Yours sincerely,
Pan Am

50 Years Ago Today: Aviation History

On October 26, 1958 a Pan Am Boeing 707 aircraft called Clipper America took off from New York City's Idlewild Airport (now called JFK) and flew to Orly Airport in Paris, with only a stop in Gander, Newfoundland. The aircraft carried 111 passengers and 11 crew. The entire journey took 8.5 hours. What we consider commonplace today was very much a novelty back then!

You can read more about this momentous event here and the British equivalent here.

Seattle Visit: Day 2

The morning of our first full day in Seattle started off with walking Mike's dog, Rufus. He's about 120 lbs but absolutely the gentlest dog you'd ever meet. Once in a while his two feline housemates annoy him, which prompts a big paw smacking against the floor. Other than that, he's just a big softie.
We drove into Seattle and picked up our friend, Hannah. After getting some sandwiches at a local supermarket deli we drove across I-90 to Mercer Island.
We parked near the off-ramp and had an impromptu picnic on a grassy field that sits over top of the freeway.

The police closed the I-90 bridge at 12:45pm and then let all the pedestrians and bicyclists on a few minutes later. From there we watched the forthcoming air show.

I love my Canon G9 camera but with just a 6X optical zoom it was ill-equipped to properly capture these magnificent airplanes flying by at very fast velocities. In my earlier posting I've published some of the photos Mike shot with his 200 - 400mm zoom lens.

The most amazing thing about the airshow is how incredibly loud the planes are when they fly overhead at lower altitudes. When they're really motoring, it sounds like the air is literally being split apart. I'd never seen an airshow before and was so impressed that I'd like to make this an annual event!

After the show we dropped off Hannah and then joined some others at the P.F. Chang's at Bellevue Square. Not exactly a traditional Asian meal but the atmosphere and food are always top notch.

Later in the evening we drove downtown so that Danny could join Hannah and her friend for the midnight release of Stephenie Meyer's new book. I'm not familiar with this author but apparently she's all the rage with 15 year-old girls.
While the young ones were waiting at the Barnes & Noble, Mike & I met up with my friend, Ahmed. The three of us enjoyed some great desserts at The Cheesecake Factory.
A long day but a very memorable one!

Blue Angels in Seattle

Here are some fantastic photos of the Blue Angels taken by my friend, Mike, with his Canon digital SLR and his 200 - 400mm Zoom lens. They were shot from the I-90 off ramp to Mercer Island, in the center of Lake Washington. A crowd of a thousand or so people had gathered to watch this amazing feat of technology and aviator skill. At times the noise was deafening but the entire performance could be summed up in one word: AWESOME You can view the entire set of Mike's photos here.

I must add that on the drive down yesterday there was a discussion on the radio with some Metrosexual Ultra-Liberal Politically Correct Capitol Hill resident that the Blue Angels should not be allowed to perform in Seattle. This girly-man was nothing short of pathetic, citing issues of safety and wasting oil. He outright lied when he said that 50% of Seattle residents agree with him. The #1 thing that likely irks him the most was the profound demonstration of American military power on display by the Blue Angels. Somehow this gave me extra pleasure to watch them! :-)

Traveling to Hawaii

H-Day had finally arrived! It was time for my Mom & I to fly to Hawaii! I had hoped to take her here a year ago but just couldn't swing it. But after much planning and some good deals I found on the Internet, we were now on our way. My friend, Deenu, picked us each up and drove us to the airport.

We checked in with plenty of time to spare and waited for our first flight, a short trip to Seattle.

Though we were technically on United Airlines all the way, this first flight was on a propeller plane operated by Air Canada. We began panicking when the flight didn't depart on time. 5 minutes ... 10 minutes ... 15 minutes ... it ended up leaving 35 minutes late!

There wasn't a whole lot to see other than the magnificent Gulf / San Juan Islands.

Arriving in Seattle, I thought we had to go across the entire airport to reach our next flight, but fortunately it was only 30 yards away. Most everyone else had already boarded! But the time we got into our seats, it was only about 3 minutes later when the doors were closed. Here's a quick video I took before the plane left the gate:

It was crystal clear on the way down to San Francisco, giving us gorgeous views of many mountains along the way.

Arriving in San Francisco, we were right on schedule so I knew we didn't have to rush for our next plane.

The SFO airport had some great large scale model airplanes hanging from the ceiling; a great tribute to the history of aviation.

Only in San Francisco!

A weary traveler has to eat! This was a superb burrito, one of the best I've ever had.

Our flight to Honolulu was absolutely packed. My mom and I were seated in different rows. I was fortunate to be seated in between a great father and his son from San Jose. I later learned that his wife and their 2 daughters were seated in the row in front of us.

United has a "Halfway to Hawaii" game. Based on the stats they provide, you submit an entry about when precisely the plane passes the halfway point. Using math, I calculated when the halfway point "should be" but failed to add a fudge factor to account for acceleration and such. If you ever play, add about 15 minutes to the mathematical midway point of the trip.

Here are the 3 great ladies of the aforementioned family. The girl in the center was turning 7 on the day after we arrived. She became my instant buddy and pretty much wanted to adopt me! I do hope to meet them again one day.

The Boeing 787

Here's an animated video of the new Boeing 787 that will be released [for real] next year:

Danny and I saw this plane being assembled last month, just south of Everett, Washington. It's a magnificent piece of technology!

Leaving Chicago

It has been a good 2 weeks here ... really good. There's something about this city that I connect with on so many levels. Ten years ago I thought my destiny lay here. I cannot deny that I still think my future and Chicago's may be intertwined.
