The 2010 Olympics Torch Cauldron

These exclusive photos of the Torch Cauldron come from my friend and fellow volunteer, Carine.

Record Weekend Expected in Vancouver

This morning I was talking with a visiting friend from Texas about the crowds in Vancouver.  Based on several factors we concluded that this upcoming weekend of Feb 20-21 will likely be the busiest of the entire Games.  Then this evening I read this.  At times I've had to avoid the extremely popular Canada Line in favour of buses, which are generally not that crowded.

Day 7 of the Olympics

Today, for your viewing enjoyment, there are 2 videos and a whole lot of new photos!

The day's photos I shot can be viewed here.

P.S. Speaking of photos, in my capacity as a Photo Assistant at the Games I was able to view some amazing shots of Alexandre Bilodeau after his gold medal win - beyond spectacular!

Day 6 of the Olympics

I've gained use of some really fancy computers brought here by Microsoft.  So now during my breaks I can upload my photos shot during the same day.  Here's a collection of my best photos taken this day.

Athletes Village Photos

On February 9th & 11th I had the great honour to work at a number of Team Welcoming Ceremonies.  You can view an assortment of photos from these days here & here.

Olympics Photos - Recent Past

With so little free time on my hands these days, I've given up on uploading more than one or two photos per blog post here.  This is entirely because there is no effective way to upload them in a batch.  This is not the case with Facebook, where you can upload hundreds with just a few keypresses.

I'm going to use this opportunity to provide public links to those photos on Facebook.  I hope you like them!

Special Message from John Furlong

"We thank ... our selfless, tireless blue-jacketed volunteers!" -- John Furlong at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games - February 12, 2010

May the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver & Whistler be a stellar success!!!

A Wonderful Olympic Encounter

Guess who I met?  As I was leaving my shift at the Olympic Athlete's Village yesterday evening I met Isabel Clark Ribeiro, Brazilian snowboarding champion.  I helped her carry her [very] heavy sports bag across the street, where she met her sister and family.  Super nice people all!

At some points I was carrying it on my own.  At other times we were doing so together.

I hope great things happen for Isabel and the test of the Brazilian team while they're here in British Columbia!

Here's a video of Isabel doing her thing:

2010 Olympics Opening Ceremonies

I, and thousands of other Team 2010 volunteers, were treated to a spectacular Dress Rehearsal of the Opening Ceremonies this past evening.  I am sworn to secrecy other than to say that if you watch it this Friday, February 12th @ 6:00pm PST (9:00pm EST) you will be ABSOLUTELY blown away!!!

Here's a photo I took a week ago of the tickets I collected on behalf of myself and 9 other volunteers:

February 9th, 2010 - What a DAY!!!

February 9th - My first shift ever at the 2010 Olympics! If you'd like a little glimpse into what life is like for us working there, I'm posting this screenshot of my hours from yesterday, which I'm accurately recording for my own personal recollection. These are the longest hours I've worked in some time but also the most fun I've had in some time! The best part of all is meeting sooooo many great folks from all over Canada and the World.

P.S. Yesterday I also was just a few metres away from some folks you may have heard of: Canada's Governor General Michaelle Jean and IOC President Jacques Rogue.

Vectorial Elevation Goes Live!

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's amazing light show has gone live in Vancouver!  Located a few hundred metres west of the Burrard Street Bridge, it is unlike anything this city has ever seen before!  Perhaps what's most incredible is that anyone from around the world can design an animation sequence for the spotlights from the comfort of their home computer!  More adventurous techies would take great delight in submitting a light sequence from a wireless laptop down at False Creek!

KatKam is providing live coverage here.  My friend, Tucker, and I went down there and captured some initial shots, albeit without the use of a tripod.  I assure you that'll change next time!!

Olympic Volunteers are Policing Their Own!

The line-up for volunteers to get tickets for the Opening Ceremonies Dress Rehearsal went really well - yes, long lines but everyone seemed quite content.  It was an excellent networking opportunity!

Of the 25,000 getting tickets, a handful of bad apples are trying to resell their tickets on Craigslist, disgracing themselves and disrespecting their fellow volunteers, the general public, and VANOC.  But other volunteers are fighting back!

Vancouver: The Calm Before the Olympics

With everything going on right now, I'm a little behind in posting, but here's a video compilation from videos and time lapses shot on the last day of January:

How to Properly Welcome a Visiting Volunteer!

Several weeks ago, through Facebook I befriended an Olympic volunteer from Northern Germany. Later today she's arriving from Deutschland to help us with our Games. I find that to be a pretty amazing commitment!  So the very least I could do is meet her at YVR and properly welcome her here!
